    I became a part of the Cherry Bend team in June 2007 after graduating from Michigan State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Animals have always been an important part of my life, and I also enjoy the unique opportunity I have to help people by keeping their animals healthy. While a student, I had the chance to serve on a mission trip to Honduras, where we cared for cattle and horses of the local villagers. Now I am excited to promote the human-animal bond by providing care for the fuzzier members of the family here in Traverse City. When I am not at work, I enjoy hiking, bicycling, and pretty much anything else that will get me outdoors. I am thrilled to be a part of the wonderful team at VCA Cherry Bend and look forward to meeting you and your pets.

  • Dr. John Sheard

    DVM

    Dr. John Sheard graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and joined Cherry Bend Animal Hospital in 2010. John also has an MBA in finance and prior to becoming a veterinarian, spent 14 years working in corporate finance. While in school, John served as Treasurer for the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Association and was the recipient of both a Veterinary Dental Award and Student Achievement Award in Small Animal Medicine. John's primary areas of interest are small animal internal medicine and both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. He is a member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Sheard is excited to meet the clients and patients of Cherry Bend Animal Hospital and to provide compassionate, high quality medical care. John lives in Traverse City with his wife Kathy, their son Logan, their Yellow Labs Koda and Skyler and California King Snake Salazar. His pastimes include fly fishing, biking and camping.

    VMD

    Katherine Albro Houpt received her veterinary degree and also her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. Dr Houpt specializes in the treatment of behavior problems of animals, primarily dogs, cats, and horses. She directed the Animal Behavior Clinic and taught at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. Dr Houpt is the author of many papers and a widely used textbook, Domestic Animal Behavior. She frequently lectures both nationally and internationally. Dr. Houpt has a behavior consultation business and services all of Northern Michigan. Dr. Houpt is currently accepting new patients and she is willing to perform consultations on location here at VCA Cherry Bend Animal Hospital or within the patient's home.
